You should definitely come to Malmö. It used to be a shithole.
What so particular about this city is that just a little time ago it use to be a real dump.
Paris and London use to be shitholes in the middle of nowhere too, but that was a long time ago. Now, both are fully developed grownup cities everybody knows about, where you can have all sorts of amazing experience, except of seeing their compelling 'teenage years'.
Malmo is still an adolescent city, with all madness, cuteness and exaggerations for good and for bad and for an amazing weird experience.
In the following Malmo-tagged posts we would like to tell you what is so awesome about Malmo, what is terrible, and where and when is the best to come along for the proper night out in this city.

cheerful rebels
One of the last days before Distortion we saw a cheerful prosession on the station. Being dressed as a policeman with a huge eyelashes and wearing a glitter stuff on the face, we obviously thought that shoul be somebody from the festival as well. But not. These guys appeared to be just some bunch of activists trying to promote free transport for everyone... so utopic but nice
And their retro tape recorder was really touching!

Powered by Pornophonique 8bit-nostalgia: gameboy meets lagerfeuer
If memory do not cheat on me, couple of years ago on last.fm, then still free of charge I came across Pornophonique for the first time. Since I listen to their music until my brain knows every blip, my ears bleed and begging me to give it a brake. So I do, and not listening for their music for a little while, but set "GameOver" as a ringtone, and come back to listening to their touching tracks again. I'm listening to one at this very moment, which hinders my writing, but who cares.
Yes, this short post will be not about Pornophonique, but my fascination by this band, their music and lyrics. This is because, dear reader can find everything I know and more about them online.

One day though, I'm willing to meet creators of these beautiful tracks in person, and hopefully, write about them in a more respectful place. I have some questions to ask these two. It might turn out that both of the creators of beautiful bewitching sounds are both atrocious fearsome creatures mastering magic.
It might also happen that they are nice people, but meeting them will render me speechless, so I will never find out more than it is available on the web. Time will show. Apart from the album, there are remixes available, I highly recommend the remix on "Space Invaders" :

with a hint of balinese Barong Dance to it.
This post is mainly addressed to those for whom 8bit consoles like at Atari, or a GameBoy were the early and the most personal introduction to the music. Those days, 8bit music accompanied long evenings spent with friends, magic and amazement of discovering new unseen levels.
Since then, 8bit subtle pitches are forever connected with beauty, magic, friendship, love and all sorts of embarrassingly sentimental, dear to me memories. My apologies for the certain elitism, I suppose, if you never had an 8bit game console or were born directly into 16bit, you might as well find 8bit music as moving as I find it.
Rock and pop music, on the other hand, came from older friends or siblings, radio, parents. It was something cool from outside world, replacing lovely but cheesy lullabies, songs from cartoons and kiddies vinyls.
To make a long story short, Pornophonique is a mixture of both, it triggers concealed parts of my soul, and leaves me helplessly daydreaming, missing my pixelised 8bit paradise lost.

We would like to call the Distortion something like... Well, perhaps, legitimized madness. And this madness lasts for several days. Certainly, we don't mean it in a bad way - it was just incredibly amazing to see all these streets filled with crowds.
Jusi imagine: the cities where we are originally from (Moscow and Saint-Petersburg) are several times bigger that not only Copenhagen, but the whole Denmark. But we have never seen anything like this before. The fact that people leave their cosy homes just to join street parties, to dance, well, just to celebrate something without a particular reason is amazing. Europe has always been represented in Russian minds as something boring, calm and regular, but I felt so sorry for my friends who were there on this night...
The only mistake (it wasn't actually a mistake in case it accidentaly helped us just to move from street to street and meet all these self-made parties with huge retro tape recorders) we made the first day was the fact we forgot to check a map and understood a printed one completely wrong. So we were desperately searching for a gay bar called Cosy. We just wanted some techno beats, but found only J.Lo playing there. With this funny feeling we left this place for Soup kitchen where found a really cool party.
When you are on the festival somewhere outside the city everything crazy going on seems to be normal, but this one didn't feel like it was something out of context... People were sitting on the open windows. One guy was calling somebody from the top of a road sign. But it was so normal. So we just broke up all these thoughts like "omg are they going to be able to clean everything until tomorrow???" with "fuck it. it's just amazing".
Let's see what is going to happen today.

Confusion with The Zombie Crawl
The first thing which caught our attention was a group of joyful young men covered with blood, queuing up infront of an ATM.
We advanced towards a dancefloor through the slightly bewildered, but festive atmosphere.
Seldom men and women with signs of decomposition or on their body or bloodstains on their clothes were able to be seen.
The moment we approached a soundsystem, door behind it opened and let out a cavalcade of the zombies whom quickly outnumbered general distortion public.
Danish school teacher whom we met in Kongens park, was kind to inform us about http://www.copenhagenzombiecrawl.dk/ - a contemporary copenhagen tradition that everyone can participate on the 1st of June.If you will be here for the next Distortion, check the Zombie Crawl out as well. It is a worthy pageant to start the Distortion.
